Rufous-Naped Wren at Hotel Bougainvillea

The Hotel Bougainvillea is our favorite spot when flying in and out of Costa Rica from San Jose. It's a short shuttle ride from the airport, and it's the perfect place to start your birding excursion.

The gardens are alive with the sounds of parrots and dozens of bird species throughout the year.

On our last trip, I had a lot of fun watching the Rufous-naped wrens hunting in the garden and returning to their nests to feed their young.

They were kept very busy hunting for caterpillars in the vegetation. Occasionally, they'd perch for a second so I could get a shot in the morning light.

After observing them for a few minutes, I was able to find their nest. It's well-camoflauged in the palms.
